What does 1 Chronicles 23:3 mean?

David ordered a census of the Levites, the tribe set apart for temple work, and found there were 38,000 men aged thirty and older available for service. This counting happened late in David's reign when he was organizing the temple worship and preparing for his son Solomon to build the permanent temple structure. The age threshold of thirty reflected when Levites were considered mature enough for the demanding spiritual work of maintaining worship and teaching God's law to Israel. It's a practical moment in Scripture showing how God's people organized themselves around their calling to serve Him together.
