What does 1 Chronicles 21:7 mean?
David had just ordered a census of Israel's fighting men, an act that revealed his trust in military numbers rather than in God. When David realized what he'd done, he immediately confessed his sin, but the consequences came anyway: God allowed a plague to spread through the land, and many people died for a decision their king had made. This is a hard passage for modern readers because the punishment seems to fall on innocent people. But it shows the Old Testament reality that leaders' choices have communal consequences, and that God takes seriously our tendency to rely on our own strength instead of trusting him.
