1 Chronicles 21:2
“David said to Joab and to the princes of the people, “Go, count Israel from Beersheba even to Dan; and bring me word, that I may know how many there are.””
What does 1 Chronicles 21:2 mean?
David orders a census of his kingdom, asking his military commander Joab to count every person from the southern border (Beersheba) to the northern border (Dan). On the surface, this seems like a practical administrative task, but the wider story reveals why this troubled God and David's own conscience. The census reflected pride in military strength and human numbers rather than trust in God's protection, and it eventually led David to deep repentance. Sometimes when we try to measure and control our security through our own power, we miss what God is actually calling us to trust him for.
