“David said, “I will show kindness to Hanun the son of Nahash, because his father showed kindness to me.” So David sent messengers to comfort him concerning his father. David’s servants came into the land of the children of Ammon to Hanun, to comfort him.”
What does 1 Chronicles 19:2 mean?
David is honoring a debt of gratitude. Years before, Nahash (king of Ammon) had treated David with kindness, and now that Nahash has died, David wants to return that favor to his son Hanun by offering condolences and support during his time of grief. It's a beautiful picture of someone remembering loyalty and choosing to extend compassion across national boundaries, even though the two kingdoms weren't always allies.
